The mesmerizing webcam

Jan 20, 2012

5NINES designed and hosted the live high-definition video feed that was viewed over 1 million  times since it went live on January 17th.

Technology:

The most often asked question is what equipment are we using.  Our Network Guru, Tony Kapela, provided the following list of equipment that he used to design the streaming system and about 30 hours of brain power.

-Canon HV30 camera, using UYVY-4:2:2 HDMI output

-BlackMagic Designs' "Intensity Pro" PCI-Express HDMI interface card

-Custom BlackMagic drivers running under Linux, based on release 9.0 of their public software development kit

-VidoLAN Client (VLC) supports logo insertion, h.264 transcoding, frame re-scaling, and transport stream creation, running on a Linux 2.6 kernel

-WOWZA Media Server on Linux to support HTTP-Chunked, RTMP, RTMP-T, and RTSP stream access for flash/browsers, iDevices, Android, and Blackberrys

-Yes it is possible to play audio.

What am I watching?

The Wisconsin Government Accountability Board has written a great article about the process and what is being viewed. http://gab.wi.gov/elections-voting/recall/webcam

Media Buzz:

A story written by Scott Bauer, Associated Press, went viral on Friday, Jan 20. The article can be read on just about every online news site as far away as India.

The twitter account @recallcam is not written or sponsored by us. But we have to say it was a great idea and we love it.  They are over 1200 followers at its peak.
